both fresh and salted fish, but considerable efforts to

check this have been successful and the wholesaling has

declined.

(3) The Fishing Industry. Progress towards the rehabilitation

of the fishing industry as a whole has not been spectacul

A survey of the Junk Building Industry has been completed

Aberdeen, Shaukiwan, Kowloon, Yaumati and Shamshuipo. The

survey of the junkyards at Shekki and Macao will be carrie

out in the near future, and the position in these areas

regarding the supply of net-making materials and bamboo,

will also be investigated.

There is a shortage of fishing nets and other necessary

gear, but it is hoped to obtain some equipment from the

Shekki neighbourhood.

TELECOMS & ELECTRICAL.

TELECOMS.

(a) Staff. Many of the lower grade staff have reported for

duty, but there is still a serious shortage of experienced

technicians and mechanicians. With the arrival of new

equipment further increase of still will be necessary. (b) Commercial Services. Considerable assistance has been

given to Cable & Wireless in re-establishing the commer-

cial radio-telegraph services which are being run with

temporary equipment in temporary premises. The cable

instrument room is being installed in the G.P.0. Bldg. Plant, and equipment have been delivered to the Cape D'Aguilar site, and work will commence as soon as

transportation difficulties have been overcome.
